How to calculate if a post went viral

One division turns a vague feeling into a number you can trust.

To calculate whether a post went viral: (1) take the engagement (reactions + comments + shares) of your last 10-20 posts; (2) find the median — the middle value; (3) divide the post in question by that median. The result is the baseline multiple. 1× is an average post, 3× is strong, 5× or more went viral for your account, 10×+ is a rare outlier.

Posteriks finds posts that beat their own account baseline in your niche and helps you build your own version — not a copy. Check your own post free →

Worked example: your recent posts sit around 120 engagements (median). A post lands 900. 900 ÷ 120 = 7.5× — a clear breakout. If another post hits 4,000 views but only 110 engagements, it barely cleared 1× — it reached people but did not resonate. The multiple, not the view count, is the honest calculation.

FAQ

Median or average?

Median. A single past outlier can drag the average up and hide new breakouts; the median stays steady.

Do I include the viral post in the median?

No — take the median of your other recent posts, then compare the post in question to it.
